St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Saint Paul, MN, held a delightful “Ladies Philoptochos Afternoon Tea” on the Saturday before Mother’s Day 2024. This is an amazing group of women who gather their talents on a regular basis to help those in need and support their parishes. The name “Philoptochos” is rooted in the Greek language and means “Love of the Poor” or "Friend of the Poor". It was at this lovely event that Sunday Best Coffee Company had its first official Launch event. And what a reception! We celebrated the culmination of months of joyful work: inspiring, advising, encouraging, measuring, brewing, and blind taste testing. For the first time, Sunday Best products were available to see and touch after weeks of blind-taste-testing by the congregation. What a big milestone for what started out as a little venture. This is probably the first time in history that a coffee company was “launched” at a High Tea!
This joyful celebration continued the next morning during our Mother’s Day Coffee Hour following morning Liturgy. Our Philoptochos Ladies officially introduced Sunday Best to the entire congregation in the same Fellowship Hall where it all started six months ago. Of course, many had been involved in blind-taste-testing over the previous month, so the news of Sunday Best being served at our Coffee Hours going forward brought great applause. As we pledged early on, it seems we really have put the “coffee” back in Coffee Hour! Bravo, Yiayia and Papou approved!
How appropriate, as we honored our Mothers on the Sunday following Orthodox Easter, that we had just experienced the awesome joy of Bright Week! In the Orthodox faith, the week following Easter is considered one continuous and joyful day. Thus making Bright Week a week of Sundays... aligning perfectly with our tagline, “Every day is Sunday when you’re doing something good!” Inspired on Philoptochos Sunday and launched on Mother’s Day, the Holy Spirit has been with us every step of the way! Glory to God!
